This beautifully haunting tale asks a “Would you rather?” question that might drive us insane. Which would have been better – to have had that wife and daughter, only to lose them by being committed to an asylum, or to never have had them at all and merely imagining their existence?

“It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all,” Alfred Lord Tennyson once wrote. We’re not sure he was right, at least not in this particular instance. Let’s hope we never have to test that theory ourselves.
